“Bonnaroo”
This review was originally published through Music Scene Media.
Nashville based duo Homes at Night have released their first single, “Bonnaroo” on June 10. Homes at Night features songwriters Hank Compton & Aksel Croe, and has already signed with Hazel Street Records. These two musicians have created a deep and layered soundscape, with dreamy synth, guitar, and a percussive line that feels like a heartbeat. It’s an intriguing blend of alternative, indie, and pop.
As “Bonnaroo” opens, the arrangement feels as if they are surrounded by a fog, floating somewhere nostalgic. As the guitar melody begins, it slices through like a light and gives the song direction. The choruses bring more of an explosive sound, as if suddenly waking up from the brain fog. The final bridge builds into a total instrumental breakdown. The drums pick up in intensity and a strong and clear guitar solo plays for the track’s final act. Compton’s lyrics tell a story of a broken heart that is unsuccessfully trying to move on. He’s seeing someone new, but can’t shake his connection to his ex. His vocals also have a floating quality to them, which marry into the instrumental tone seamlessly.
This single is our first taste of Homes at Night, and they intend to release their EP If You Were a Stranger soon. Homes at Night has a deeply personal sound, as both musicians aim to bring something of their own to the table. I’m interested to see where else they are headed for this EP, and will definitely be keeping an eye on them.
