“I love you too”

Kicking off the new year, IMMATERIAL! released their newest single, “I love you too” today. IMMATERIAL! features Abby and Camille, two mid-20s queer artists living in Brooklyn. Inspired by SOPHIE, the two blend otherworldly, avant-garde production with the authentic reality of their daily lives. Entirely self-taught, IMMATERIAL! records at the New York Public Library, and released their EP Right Thing at the end of 2024.

“I love you too” starts with a gentle whistle, like wind rushing past, evoking imagery of falling backward in slow motion. They land in a dream-like state, cushioned with velvety synth holding out dramatic chords. Bass notes undulate underneath the melody, playing into the surrealism. Midi bells add gentle accents, twinkling by, creating levity in an otherwise dark soundscape. The tempo slowly marches forward, as if each step requires intention and effort. As the track enters the final act, synth horns slide in, hopeful and bright. Finally, the sun is peaking though the clouds.

Abby and Camille lean into using autotune and overproduction in their voices but have found a happy medium that allows human emotion to still shine through. In the track, they’re pleading, and if you’re not careful, it seems like they are asking for something from a romantic partner. But on a closer listen, “I love you too” delves into the guilt and heaviness felt when you just can’t love them back. They are begging, but not for validation – this time, it’s for relief. Tension and strained emotions in the vocal line underscore how deeply they want to reciprocate this love, but it’s just not meant to be.

IMMATERIAL! are out and about around Brooklyn, but their music is available on all streaming platforms. Give them a follow and hopefully they will soon visit a city near you!
