“Maybe”
Nazzy the Mic has followed up her debut album with the single “Maybe,” released at the end of April. The 17-year-old, Philly based artist released the album I Speak Pain in February but she isn’t losing any momentum. Nazzy defines herself as a “pain rapper,” and treats recording as an opportunity to get some of the heartbreak off her chest. Nazzy’s life has been filled with abandonment struggles, identity issues, and troubled personal relationships. Her lyrics are introspective and mature, but still remind the listener that she is young and full of potential.
Where I Speak Pain provided an overview of Nazzy’s life, “Maybe” goes deeper. Nazzy opens up more about specific traumas in her childhood, and how they still affect her every day. The song opens with faded and echoing lines, almost as if Nazzy has too much on her mind and can’t focus. However, as soon as the verse starts, she snaps into a tight rhyme that stays at a consistent energy level throughout the track. Her personal and deep lyrics prove that she’s undergone some personal growth in the past few months, and is channelling that into her art.
Instrumentally, the track is pretty stripped back. The beat is subtle, but enough to keep the song moving. It never eclipses the vocals, and even drops out for emphasis a few times. There is a piano playing chords throughout, adding a tinge of melancholy and emotion. There are a handful of additional musical accents, but the piano and beat provide a platform for her vocals, which have a heavy reverb. Overall, the track keeps the same sound Nazzy the Mic introduced her listeners to in I Speak Pain, but with deeper lyrics and interesting musical arrangement. Hopefully, Nazzy is also expecting to release more music in the near future, and I personally can’t wait to hear what she does next.
