Nude Mood

Following the release of their single Hot Hot Hot in December 2021, Nude Mood delivered their debut, self-titled album to audiences on January 21st. The album features Doug Davenport on guitar and lead vocals, Brian Geiger on bass, and Sal Carollo on drums. The overarching theme in Nude Mood is the band’s ability consistently mix their own rock and jazz sounds with nostalgic influences from the 1970’s and 1980’s. The journey through the album is driven by Carollo’s extensive percussionist skills that transcend genre.

The album opens with the track “Algae,” which sets the mood for the record’s story. The first few seconds contain a mournful guitar opener, but it quickly transitions to an upbeat and percussive melody. The quick shift in attitude complements Davenports’ earnest vocals, describing how he feels as if he’s “stuck in the algae” and all alone. The album then moves to “Turn Me On,” a track that features a dreamy second half, before flowing into the first short break in the album.

Three 15-30 second tracks break the album into sections and help the listener move along in the record’s campaign. They are the trippy and ethereal “smiling pills,” the experimental “11-921,” and haunting “bourdon bells.”  After “11-921,” Nude Mood shows off their rock chops with the track “Slit Princess.” This 3 minute song features a guitar-heavy melody supported by Geiger’s bass line and Carollo’s driving rhythms. Nude Mood concludes with another hard rock track, “Solace.” The final song is slower and more intense than “Slit Princess,” but still a departure from the jazzier and dreamier songs that come before it.

Nude Mood’s debut album will be a strong litmus test for the band’s future success. It’s immediately clear that the band works well together while still having valuable room for growth. Nude Mood is active in the New Jersey music scene, and can be found playing locally in and around Morris county.
