“Something That I Told You”
Up-and-comer Sadie Cannon released her newest single “Something That I Told You” on October 28th, and the track has gained serious traction on socials. The Nashville-based artist unveiled the accompanying video a few days later, showing the audience that Sadie Cannon knows how to work the camera. This is her second single this year, following “Healed Girl Summer” in July. Cannon wrote the song herself, and it was produced by Sunny Norway.
Cannon opens “Something That I Told You” with snaps and claps for a beat, and swirling, electro-pop chords. When the vocals start, she utilizes the bottom of her range to add gravity to her message. A depressing realization is coming to her – her man might be toxic. As the bridge begins, her voice develops a sassy “pop” twang, and deep bass drum kicks in. The energy builds, and a snare drum breaks through as the chorus begins. Dreamy harmonies float below the melody, supporting Cannon as she laments being left on read. She’s concerned that “Something That I Told You” put off her man, and it’s driving her crazy. Cannon draws inspiration from pop and R&B, and she blends the genres together beautifully. The guitar and bass are funky, but the beat is electronic and makes the listener feel like dancing.
The music video takes the viewer on a journey. A retro TV is playing as Cannon describes their “situation-ship.” Her man is watching the TV, and he hears her vent her frustrations. The lyrics are full of self-doubt and worry over the mixed signals he’s sending, but the visuals stay upbeat. Cannon confidently dances through iconic pop music video scenes, including a bakery, an alley wearing caution tape, a boudoir shoot, and a Disney-themed villain. Cannon is clearly aware of the potential she possesses, and hopefully she will have more work for us in 2023.
