“Why Did You Go?”
UK artist CHVRLI BLVCK has only been releasing music for about a year but has already made an impression in his local music scene. The indie artist describes his music as a type of public therapy, taking on mental illness, love, and loss in his tracks. These themes are especially true in his March release, “Why Did You Go?” His raw approach and swirling style make the song a powerful take on a relationship ending.
BLVCK’s single takes the listener through the painful healing journey after a fresh break-up. “Why Did You Go?” opens with heavy distortion on a romantic string melody, before snapping back to reality. A clean and wistful acoustic guitar jumps in, supported by a subdued drumbeat. The vocals instantly cut through – a deep, mournful and full tone filled with the fresh hurt. However, as the track progresses, higher harmonies join in and allow new, brighter colors in BLVCK’s tone to steal the spotlight. He croons about the new emptiness he’s facing, and marvels at how the march of time can make the life they built together fall into obsolescence. The drum picks up in volume and tempo, as if BLVCK is moving into another stage of grief, and the track closes out with clear vocals and swirling synth notes. Finally, he has moved through the pain and found his peace, as if finally falling asleep after a restless night.
BLVCK is planning on releasing another single, “Pathetic Paradise,” on June 28, so be sure to mark your calendars. Hopefully he will be touring soon, but in the meantime take a look at his work online.
