“What’s in the Trunk?”

South Carolina rock group Seven Year Witch released their single, “What’s in the Trunk?” this August. Founded in 2018, Seven Year Witch features Aaron Langford as lead vocals, Porter Dowdy on guitar, and brothers Spencer Burden and Seth A Burden on bass and drums respectively. The group loves to tour, aiming to bring high energy and tracks that are easy to move to.

Opening on a grooving baseline, “What’s in the Trunk?” saunters in confidently. Bass drums from Seth, Dowdy’s guitar, and Spencer’s bass hit just the downbeats, giving room for Langford’s bright vocals to chronicle their predicament. By creating space in the verses, Seven Year Witch hits the choruses with an impactful wall of sound. They deliver backing vocals and unyielding drums, before a ghostly solo from Dowdy brings the track back around to the verse. Langford’s register spans a large range, from a higher, almost strained pleading in the verse and chorus and settling deep in the bridge.

Sitting between blues and classic rock, Seven Year Witch weaves retro elements into the track. The video echoes the sentiment, with each member flaunting a 70’s style suit and sitting in a vintage, green Mustang. Opening on the band throwing a suspicious bag into the trunk, Seven Year Witch successfully turns a dark storyline into something fun, clever, and campy. Interspersed with shots including giving the “bag” CPR, cuddling with it, posing with weapons, and windswept glamor, the video is a joy from start to finish. During the bridge, the bag even grows legs and attempts to escape.

Seven Year Witch is finishing up their tour on the East Coast next month, so head to their website and grab your tickets now. It’s bound to be a good time.
