“You could break my heart”

In October, Toronto-turned-NYC musician Maddie Regent released her single “You could break my heart.” Crafted alongside producer (and boyfriend) Cade Hoppe, Regent successfully captured the raw honesty of falling in love. The track romanticizes the good and the bad parts of relationships, including the end.

Against a blanketed backdrop of plucky piano, twinkling strings, and swirling synth, Regent pours her heart out. She finds herself deeply in love, in the vulnerable position where they could now hurt her. Her vocal tone finds the space between floating and raspy, mourning the imagined scenario where her relationship ends. A slight reverb on the vocal line adds to the dreamy aura, sitting over layered instruments that bring the listener outside of reality.

As the track moves forward, intensity ebbs and flows, fluid in nature. Beating bass drum feels like a heart, rapid and sitting under the other instrumental colors. At times, the background surges so close to the surface, it threatens to drown out the melody. In the build to the chorus, held brass notes add subtle tension and texture, tethering Regent to earth. She repeats that this relationship could break her heart, but it has been so special. She might even thank them at the end.

Maddie Regent has been performing around New York, capturing audiences’ hearts and the attention of local publications. She has several singles out now, and hopefully an album soon. Be sure to give her a follow.
