“WILDERNESS”

UK-based singer/songwriter Sarah Reynolds has released three different versions of her song “WILDERNESS.” The first rendition is the original single, but there are also two additional remixes available. In this review, I will look into all three. Reynolds prides herself on her eclectic taste in music, and feels that “WILDERNESS” showcases this, as it is her most authentic release to date. The song captures how it feels to be stuck or lost, and turning to God or a trusted advisor to help.

The song opens with piano chords that create a tapestry and allow her vocals to shine before the song really picks up. As the song progresses, the instrumentals swell to create a total wall of sound that supports her graceful melody. The blend here creates something almost haunting, and it sticks with the listener as the song progresses. Reynolds uses her deep and colorful vocals to convey the seriousness of her emotions. As the song closes, it returns to just the piano before ending on a calming chord.

In the LTWO Remix, the piano chords are subbed in for a distorted electric guitar. There is also a stronger percussion presence, giving the track an edgier vibe. Her vocals are also slightly distorted, but only enough to create a different texture. The intonation is still definitely Reynolds. The bridge features even more distortion and overpowering guitar, which is admittedly more captivating and impactful than the bridge in the original. The almost desperate sound of the guitar evokes more emotion. Overall, this remix adds a bit of grit and is more upbeat, but keeps the same general feel as the original.

The Féz Remix is a complete departure. The song has become entirely electro-pop, but that isn’t necessarily a detriment. Although it feels nothing like the other two, it is still engaging and interesting. Reynolds vocals are wildly distorted, making it almost unrecognizable, and 80’s style synth beats take center stage. The fact that one song can be a common thread through these three totally unique tracks is incredible.

When she isn’t recording, Sarah Reynolds runs a business called The Song Scribe. The Song Scribe creates bespoke songs that can be commissioned for personalized gifts. They offer their services in packages, so each gift can be tailored to the buyer. Be sure to check them out!
