“You Are Right”
Last month, Canadian rock band Absolight released their newest single, “You Are Right.” Consisting of drummer Anthony Jomphe and twins Carl Ricard on bass and Olivier Ricard on guitar and vocals, the three hail from Quebec. Originally called In Foes, the trio started off as friends in a jam session, but they quickly realized they had so much more to give.
Absolight credits British rock as their biggest influence, which is evident in the track. The guitar timbre is reminiscent of classic rock, and Olivier’s clear tone echoes the openness of early 2000’s lead vocalists. Throughout “You are Right,” Aboslight adds and removes instrumental voices, building interest and intensity with each layer. Opening strong with a relentless riff from the guitar, Absolight waits a few bars before adding the drums and later the bass. Together, the three instruments crescendo, and break the tension when the guitar swaps the bright, lead riff for a dark and gritty line.
Finally, Olivier jumps in to provide vocals, and a synth joins. It rises and falls over the scale, processed to sound like 80’s-pop. The frantic energy swirls under the vocals, which remain direct and angry, but controlled. As they tumble into the chorus, Olivier expresses his frustration with someone, conceding that they are “right,” simply because they are not worth the energy to disagree with. The synth continues to whizz by, like pelting rain or shooting stars. As the track progresses, Aboslight continues to play with building and releasing tension, adding and removing layers to change the energy. Finally, the song builds one final time, before abruptly ending on a guitar solo.
Absolight is gearing up to release their album, Frames, in 2025 with producer Sebastien Cloutier, and have been touring around Canada over the past year. After rebranding as Absolight, the group is going above and beyond to make a name for themselves. Be sure to give them a follow for upcoming dates.
